PREFACE I HAVE been asked many times by my friends, and also by members of the Grand Army of the Republic and Women's Relief Corps, to write a book of my army life, during the war of , with the regiment of the 1st South Carolina Colored . In offering my readers my reminiscences of the late War, I feel that it is necessary to ask their indulgence and to plead extenuating circumstances for many obvious shortcomings. It should be pointed out that the preparation of this work was attended with many difficulties .

    About the Book. John Gordon () was one of the Confederacy's most capable generals. A native of Georgia, he went on to serve as governor of the state after the war.
